Group Qualifies For Grant to Boost Reading

A school improvement nonprofit group that works in the Fitchburg and Quaboag districts has raised the $1 million in private money it needed to claim a $5 million federal grant announced last month.

The Bay State Reading Institute, an organization run through Middlesex Community College in Lowell, was among 49 organizations to receive a federal Investing in Innovation grant, the government announced last month. In order to claim the money, it needed to raise private capital, which it has done, said Barry Wanger, a spokesman for the initiative.
